Hong Kong Coprinae

[Edited 2 Dec 2006, correcting errors and adding additional species from Nadia (thank you Nadia). ]

Out of interest, below is a brief description of the species of Coprinae in Hong Kong.  They are in order of size.  I have ignored horns etc as these vary sexually and individually variable.  I have not been able to find descriptions of the following species:
Liatongus pugionatus (Boheman 1858);
Onthophagus dapcauensis  Boucomont 1921;
Onthophagus lunatus Harold 1868;
Onthophagus egenus Mulsant  1842;
Onthophagus anguicorius Boucomont 1914
Onthophagus argyropygus Gillet 1927;
Onthophagus nitidus nitidus Waterhouse 1875;
Onthophagus trituber Wiedeman 1823;
Onthophagus convexicollis  Boheman 1858;
Sisyphus bowringi White 1844 and
Paragymnopleurus (Gymnopleurus) melanarius (Harold 1867).
Copris cariniceps Felsche, 1910
Copris ochus Motschulsky, 1860
Copris tripartitus Waterhouse, 1875
Gymnopleurus brahminus (Waterhouse, 1890)
Onthophagus fuscopunctatus  Boucomont 1914 ( It may be a reference to Onthophagus fuscopunctulatus  Boucomont 1914 or as Nadia points out this may be a reference to  Onthophagus fuscopunctatus Lansberge, 1883.  Both are probably synonyms anyway)

If I find descriptions of these species I will add later.  Any omissions?

Onthophagus centricornis Fabricius, 1798.

Some authors prefer the use of ‘Scarabaeinae’ over ‘Coprinae’; I’ve adopted the former.

Perhaps Onthophagus anguicorius (Boucomont 1914) should be Onthophagus anguicorius Boucomont 1914

Onthophagus fuscopunctulatus  Boucomont 1914 may be Onthophagus fuscopunctulatus Lansberge, 1883

I’m still using Copris reflexus (Fabricius, 1787) for Microcopris reflexus (Fabricius, 1787).

Perhaps Oniticellus cinctus (Fabricius 1775) should be Oniticellus cinctus Fabricius, 1775

Perhaps Paracopris furciceps  Felsche 1910 is a misspelling of Paracopris furiceps (Felsche, 1910).  I’m still using Copris furiceps Felsche, 1910 for this species.

Copris Confucius Harold 1877 is a typo of Copris confucius Harold, 1877.

Other Scarabaeinae from HK:
Copris cariniceps Felsche, 1910
Copris ochus Motschulsky, 1860
Copris sinicus Hope, 1842
Copris tripartitus Waterhouse, 1875
Gymnopleurus brahminus (Waterhouse, 1890)
Gymnopleurus sinuatus sinuatus (Olivier, 1789)
Liatongus vertagus (Fabricius, 1798)
Oniticellus sagittarius (Fabricius, 1775)
Onitis falcatus (Wulfen, 1786)
Onthophagus centricornis Fabricius, 1798
Onthophagus rectecornutus Lansberge, 1883
Onthophagus tricornis (Wiedemann, 1823)

May I add the photo of male and female Liatongus vertagus in order to make this discussion more readable by other members? From my records, this speecies seems to be quite common in central N.T. and Lantau.

Hi David,

Specimens for what?  Are you interested in Dung Beetles or is it just for a collection?  If the latter I won't be able to help you.

Look forward to your reply

Paul
