nobody has successfully reared M. gigas, so don't know if your larva is correctly identified.

thanks Mr Kendrick.

I'd like to know how does one go about rearing caterpillars....? I'm a student new to all of this and I saw many of your older posts encouraging people to do a bit more beyond photography and try to learn about the moth's metamorphosis cycle. I would very much like to at least have a basic idea of how to do this...

another question. I've seen some Taiwanese sites stating the Chinese name of M. gigas as '巨斑苔蛾', literally 'giant-spotted moss moth/lichen moth'. And they're saying the larvae feed on moss. Is this reliable information?

welcome aboard....
Most of the Taiwanese moth sites are pretty good. Yes, most Lithosiini are lichenivorous (which is why they're difficult to rear).
Please take a look at the Anglian Lepidopterists Supplies website for information (in English only, I'm afraid) on moth rearing and basic recording (as well as heaps of other useful information) . . .http://www.angleps.com/guides.php and the links from this page will help, too.  Probably worth contacting Yen Shen-horn (via the Nature Campus forum - http://210.240.1.25/~nc/bbs/index.php) about rearing moth larvae.

cheers,
Roger.
