I didn't recognise this species, so sent an e-mail to Ian Kitching at The Natural History Museum.

This was his reply:

This is a fair, but not exact, match for Rhagastis castor formosana.
As a result, I think it is Rhagastis castor jordani, which was recorded from various
localities in Guangdong north of Hong Kong by Mell as Rhagastis aurifera chinensis (although
I suspect R. c. jordani is a synonym of R. c. aurifera). If it is, then I think it will be
a new record for Hong Kong. Do you have full data and is it still alive (i.e. can we
expect a confirmatory moth)?

In other words, are you rearing this caterpillar, and if so please p.m. me a.s.a.p.
This is (provisionally) a first record for HK, so appropriate data is required, including a reared specimen or at the very least a photo of the adult, please. Without the adult, this will remain a provisional record.

update - I now have fully researched the work of Kent Li's sphingid rearings. He has reared Cechenena aegrota, and his photos exactly match. Consequently, Mao's record is not something new for Hong Kong
