Thanks Roger!  The diversity of moths is really amazing!

In HK the total currently stands at 2,047 species listed on my database. This does not include an estimated 150 or so species of unidentified microlepidoptera, several noctuids, around two dozen lymantriids and a handful of other unidentifieds. Thus there are roughly 2,250 species recorded so far. I would expect something like another 1,500 to 2,000 species await discovery in HK, almost all micromoths that have more specialist lifestyles that are not so easy to record. This figure is based on the known lists for Japan, Taiwan and the UK, whos proportions of macro to micro are roughly 1:2. There are around 1,200 macros known in HK, with perhaps another 200 to find, i.e. around 1,400 expected; twice this is 2,800 (for micros) thus 4,200 species could be a realistic estimate. The world figure is around 170,000 known species and a similar number expected to occur (including known but undescribed species).

Lepidoptera really are one of entomology's big five diverse groups!
