This cultivar was introduced from tropical America as a fodder plant. The leaves have 3 leaflets, the central leaflet is shallowly lobed on the margins, the lateral leaflets are lobed chiefly on one margin only. The inflorescence is an erect raceme with pea-shaped flowers, the standard is dark purple to almost black and the keel is twisted. The pod is straight to 11 cm long but only to 3 mm wide. A related species is M. lathyroides but here the leaflets are lanceolate and not lobed on the margins.
