My best guess would be Theretra pallicosta, (which is definitely a Sphingid/hawk moth) based on the images of the one I reared.

Are you able to provide data as to what plant it was on, and the geographical location, etc.

And, while the closeups are certainly interesting, a more distant shot might have made ID'ing a bit more easy.  Just saying...

Host plant is a tree (got photo)

Location - 百花林 close to Tai Lam Wu

The host plant seems to be "山大刀，九節 Psychotria asiatica".

Thanks kw and yip for the additional info! I'm sure Roger will also like it. One question of yip, you (or someone) has label'd the caterpillar as Cechenea aegrota. Doing a quick image search doesn't really show much, and no larval forms. I'm wondering where the ID came from? Has the Theretra pallicosta label been changed?

Hi David,

this id was from me via HK Moths on Flickr, based on material reared a long time ago by Kent Li, also from Psychotria. At the time no one else had reared this species except Mell (published in 1922) and other than Kent's Macroglossum and Sataspes papers, he never published any of his Sphingid life histories. I have his original notes and most of his photos (slides, of variable quality), some of which will be in the HK Moth book. Mao Morning also has posted photos of this species on HK Wildlife Net, at least 4 years ago.
