yes, but not one I've seen before in HK.

looks quite close to Epiphyas postvittana (Light Brown Apple Moth), though a specimen would be needed to confirm the i.d. (genitalia dis-section job).

cheers,  Roger.

Tortricidae, Tortricinae

I suspect this might be the light brown apple moth Epiphyas postvittana - a native of Australia that has become established in many places elsewhere in the world. I have not recorded it in Hong Kong, though with the amount of trade between Australia and Hong Kong, it comes as no surprise that it's turned up in Hong Kong - actually it's a surprise it's not been recorded already. The species is highly variable in pattern and colour. It is also polyphagous and a potential pest species.

cheers,  Roger.

I think this species and another one by 'sswroom' taken n 12.iv.2008 id by you also as E. postvittana may represent an unknown tortricid moth from Hong Kong which could well different from E. postvittana.  It is desirable to present this species to Tortricidae specialists for confirmation.    Better still is get hold of specimens for examination.    For the meanwhile, I have much hesitation to call it the light brown apple moth.

Without specimens we'll never know. Note I said "might" be E. postvittana - I, like you, am by no means certain of this. I would much rather it were not postvittana and something new as you suggest. This is quite possible - there are over 60 species of tortricidae awaiting i.d. from HK, one more would be very likely!

cheers,  Roger.

A further look at this species.
there appear to be raised scales in the medial and subterminal areas, which, combined with wing shape, are more like Acleris than Epiphyas. Acleris yasudai is quite close on these characters. However, Acleris is a large genus, with over 70 species known in China. Additionally, many species of Acleris have several (in some cases, many) forms. Still have to await specimens to have a chance of confirming i.d.
